In 1998, Z-Ro released his debut album, Look What You Did to Me. In 1997 he was inducted into DJ SCREW’s legendary Screwed Up Click. Z-RO then became a member of Street Military’s “Killa Klan Collective”, his fame increased. Z-RO fell in love with the process and began composing lyrics himself. "So I stayed, just to peep out the process. Everybody that ain't recording, get the fuck out! If you ain't here to work, leave'," recollects Z-Ro. "I'd go over they house, we playin' ball, smokin' weed, and around 8 o'clock, Lil' Flea used to come downstairs and be like 'look, we gonna start recording. Meeting and befriending the Hip Hop group Street Military, who were signed with EMI, would change his life. And with the streets comes the usual tale of drug selling and street brawling. Dreams and hopes dashed, Z-RO turned to the streets. This would effectively end his athletic career and forced him to look elsewhere for recognition. He still carries the shell casing in his body. Unfortunately it was also during this time that he was shot. It was while attending church and singing in the choir that Z-RO honed his now infamous ability to sing and harmonize. He maintained good grades and attended church regularly with his father. During his high school years Z-RO was a student athlete. The isolation, rejection and loneliness he experienced during this period would fuel his desire to establish himself independent of relatives and would become the lyrical basis of his musical career. Orphaned at an early age, young Joseph was shuttled from relative to relative and eventually settled in Missouri City, southwest of Houston. Z-Ro makes a cameo in Bey’s “No Angel” music video, released that same year.Declared by the New York Times as “one of America’s most underrated rappers” Hip Hop artist Z-RO was born Joseph Wayne McVey in Houston, Texas. Beyoncé recruited Z-Ro for 2014’s “I Been On (Remix),” which also features Houston legends Bun B, Scarface, Willie D, Slim Thug, and Lil Keke.48 on the Billboard 200-the highest placement of his career.
In 2003, Z-Ro guested on Scarface’s controversial single “Bitch N***a,” which disses 50 Cent.Trae debuted as a guest on Ro’s first album, 1998’s Let the Truth Be Told. He was in two groups, Guerilla Maab and ABN, with his cousin Trae The Truth.After local icon DJ Screw’s brother heard him freestyle in a club in 1997, Z-Ro became a member of the Screwed Up Click. By the mid-1990s, Z-Ro had begun freestyle rapping over R&B songs.
He was shot twice as an adolescent, which crushed his hoop dreams. He has described himself as a bookish kid who also dabbled in crime.
